Aft fuselage progress

Image
It's has been while since last post due to holiday and work traveling. But I've had progress on the aft fuselage in between. The picture below show the status. Bottom skin is finished, and left side skin is riveted. Right side skin is clecoed on and partially riveted. Static port I decided to go for the  AVERY EFIS SYSTEM PLUMBING KIT instead of the supplied one in  the empennage kit. Then I have all I need for the AOA plumbing as well. The supplied ports. I drilled to holes and countersunk them for AN426 rivets. The ports fits nicely to the skin after opening the hole to the correct size. More pictures A happy wife helping setting rivets😀

More space needed - bought a container

Image
My primary building space is small, and as the the airplane "grows" i need space for storing etc. So I decided to buy a 20 feet freight container. It's old so I will refurbish and insulate it. It will primarily be used as storage and priming. Later I might paint the aircraft and when finished I will transport the whole aircraft (in parts of course) to the airport for assembling. The only problem is that it's a bit narrow when the wheels are on. Looks a bit shabby😕

Fuselage and finish kit order revised

I decided to not go for the Beringer brakes, but will buy brake hoses and fuel lines from Aircraft Speciality . Aft fuselage

Image
After some more fairing work, I continued on to the aft fuselage. First parts found and ready for deburring. The aft most frames clecoed onto the bottom skin All structural part ready for priming. I'll do the priming in 3-4 session. My paint boot is small and the large skins will be difficult to handle. Cleavelands Tight Fit Dimpling Fixture and the male die on the rivet gun. This was necessary on the two aft frames because the web are bent beyond 90 degree and therefore impossible to reach with the squeezer. All holes against the skin on the C channel longerons has to be countersunk. The bottom is deburred and ready for etching and priming. I've built a cradle to hold the HS, VS, elevator and rudder. They are now complete.

Aero 2019

Image
I had 2 days at Aero 2019 in Friedrichshafen, and the main highlight for me was to see a finished RV-14A. It's built by Stefan Schröter, and looked beautiful. It's sold now, but Stefan is already building another RV-14.

More fairing work

Image
I've soon completed all the fairing works that is possible to to at this stage. Just some dimpling, sanding (with spray filler) and perhaps a layer of primer. I'm really looking forward to start on the aft fuselage😊 Just now I'm on my way to Aero Friedrichshafen  were Vans are having a stand , and the first flying RV-14 in Europe shall be on display. I'm really looking forward to that😊 The nut plate in the aft part was very difficult to rivet. I tried differentechniqueses, but ended up taping my bucking bar  to a steel bar.  All nut plates installed. Next was the top fairing on the rudder. It was quite straight forward. It was required to grind a groove in the front to get it flush. This is the top fairing on the VS. It has to be closed by a patch of fiberglass (see 12-07 Step 3). A final strip of fiberglass is glued into the HS tip fairings.

Molex connector, elevator attachment and fairing

Image
Since last I've spent much time on fairings and to attachment of the elevator to the horizontal stabilizer. It would have been much more fun to get started on the aft fuselage, but my workshop space is limited. So I want to complete as much as possible on the elevator, HS, VS and rudder and then store them away. Micro Molex The trim motor is supplied with micro Molex connector and they have to be crimped. I was sure I knew how to do this (had even seen then video from Stein Air), but I mixed up the "standard" size molex and the micro procedure. I bought some new ones from RS-Components. The Molex part number is 43030-0007 (female) and 43031-0007. I also bought the extraction tool with part number 11-03-0043. Broken terminals. The crimp tool from Stein Air. The finished servo motor with the Molex connector crimped. I had to function test - it works😀 Fairings First the flanges had to be adjusted. The Dremel cutter works ve...
